Group of nine, near mint, cdvs of Harald Colling (1835-1904) (aka Johan Frederik Harald Colling or Kolling) a noted Danish comic actor of the 19th century who was the first private actor to receive the Knight's Cross. All the cdv's bear a Peter Most, 22 Ostergade, Copenhagen backmark. Colling was born in Copenhagen. He began his career as an amateur actor while he was a tobaccospinner.
The director of the People's Theater, Hans Wilhelm Lange, saw him perform and signed him to a contract with the People's Theater. He had a small role in the Theater's September 18, 1857 opening performance, but this was the start of more than 450 characters he would play throughout his career. He was a hit with the Copenhagen bourgeoisie. Slight of build Colling was an excellent character actor. His most noted roles included the character Charles Sapeur (the editor) in "Copy Editor." Redaktionssekretæren) He played one season (1870-71) at the Royal Theater, but missed performing every night, and the following season returned to the Peoples Theater and remained one of their best (if not, the best) comedians. His last performance was on Sept. 14, 1901. He died three years later. He was the first private theater actor who received the Knight's Cross. [Peter Most (aka Carl Peter Herman Most (1826-1900) was a Danish photographer]. These photographs came from a Danish cdv album with most of the cdv's dating 1869, so I assume that is also the time period for these cdvs (thus making him in his mid-30s when these were taken). |
All these cdv's were for roles he had at the Peoples Theater.

Harald Kolling, Johan Frederik Harald Kolling, ved dåben Kelling, 29.4.1835-11.12.1904, skuespiller. Født i Kbh. (Petri), død sst., begravet sst. (Vestre).
Harald Kolling, Johan Frederik Harald Kolling, by baptism Kelling, 29.4.1835-11.12.1904, actor. Born in Kbh. (Petri), dead and buried in Copenhagen.
As a tobacco spinner, Kolling played dilettant comedy what was then common among many artisans. Director H. W. Lange saw him perform in the Eldorado of the amateurs Kalkeballen St. Kannikeststrede and engaged him to his new Folketeater at Nørregade, in whose opening performance 18.9.1857 Kolling joined in a small role, the first of his more than 450 characters, and thus was a connection that became a great pleasure for the Copenhagen bourgeoisie, among whose favorite actors Kolling was for many years. Far more than his contemporary Otto Zinck, Kolling characterized the folk scene with his reluctance, his discreet temper and his ability to characterize. Kolling was a dramatic gift of nature, under whose hands the art gained scenic life in its own pleasant form that lacked neither imagination nor comedy, and which was always marked by the artist's respect for the task. The little man with the excellent stage face became like no other maker of citizens from the old district of violence where the Folketeatret is housed, the diligent, courageous craftsmen who could say with warm conviction the noble pack of truth or stir to tears when praising the pleasures of home. His transformation ability celebrated triumphs when he played Bassing in the Secretary while debuting as Tanne in "She has to debut" to reconcile the comic with the touching. One season, 1870–71, Kolling worked for "Det kgl. Theater", but he did not thrive in an environment where he did not perform every night. Then he returned to the theater of Nørregade and remained there, with his shaping ability retained, until the last performance on 14.9.1901. H. Hellemann and E. Helsengreen became his heirs, but what on stage was his peculiarity, something quiet and lovable, the petty citizen's modest emotional life in the time of the violence, disappeared with Kolling He was the first private theater actor to receive the Knight's Cross. His son, Valdemar Henrik Vilhelm Kolling (1863-1912) had his Copenhagen debut at the Casino in 1884 and mainly belonged to this scene for his life. |
